Birthstones For The Months – January To June

The concept of Birthstones is prevalent since ancient times. In those days, people believed that gems possessed certain supernatural and magical powers which could protect the owner of that particular gem from all evil things. Unlike the astral gems, the birthstones are not linked to the zodiac astrology; birthstones are dependant on the birth month of an individual.

January: Garnet

The term 'Garnet' has been derived from the Latin word 'granatum' which means pomegranate. It is considered to be a gemstone of trust and faith. During the medieval periods this stone was used for the purpose of healing inflammatory diseases and internal hemorrhage.

February: Amethyst

The term 'Amethyst' has been derived from the Greek word 'amethystos' which means "not drunk". It is considered to be a gemstone of love and affection and was worn by Saint Valentine. During the medieval periods, the early Egyptians believed that the stone possessed some good powers and was therefore laid on the tombs of the pharaohs.

The color of the stone is generally pale black or purple and is the most ideal birthstone for the month of February. Amethyst is basically found in Zambia, Brazil and Uruguay.

March: Aquamarine

The term 'Aquamarine' has been derived from the Roman word 'aqua' which means water and 'mare' meaning sea. This particular name has been chosen, as the stone resembled the sea water. It is considered to be a sacred gemstone and waives off all evils in sea voyages.

During the medieval periods this stone was used for the purpose of healing aliments related to the stomach, liver and the jaws. The color of the gem is basically sea blue. The most recommended birthstone for the month of March, Aquamarine is found in Zambia, Nigeria and Brazil.

April: Diamond

The richest cousin of Graphite, diamond is considered to the birthstone for April. Diamonds are of various kinds and are also wonderful in nature. The word 'Diamond' has been taken for the Greek word 'adamas' which means the unconquerable. Though diamonds are hard and durable in nature, but they also need to be protected from sharp blows.

May: Emerald

The term 'Emerald' has been derived from the Greek word 'smaragdos' which means the green stone. It is considered to be a gemstone of patience and calmness. During medieval periods this stone was used for the purpose of improving poor eye sight, enhance low I.Q levels.

Emerald is a gem which is mainly found in green color. As the most accepted birthstone for the month of May, Emerald is found in the Zimbabwe, Zambia and Brazil.

June: Pearl

As per the Hindu or the Indian mythology, pearls are considered to be the dewdrops from heaven which fell on the sea. Unlike all the other gemstones, pearls are believed to have an organic origin. Pearls are generally irregular in shape and their commercial value is low compared to the other gemstones.

The gem with the orange cosmic rays is ruled over by the Moon. Pearl has got the brilliance of a star. Moreover, with the use of pearls, the human body becomes sober. It shuns out possibilities of widowhood in ladies and avoids stomach and chest troubles and complication of glands.
